Free Time?

Are you an American worker with plenty of free time? Probably not.

According to research mentioned in this online article, medieval peasants had more leisure time than modern-day Americans. Medieval agrarian work was seasonal, allowing for plenty of weeks off work, especially during the winter. Medieval serfs may have worked a long day in the summer, but they took long, frequent meal and sleep breaks that are unheard of now in the United States. Society revolved around plentiful, mandatory church holidays, as well.

Does this information surprise you? Why are we working so many more hours than in the 13th century? We have modern technology and labor-saving devices now, after all. I think that’s the real question!
